Competitiveness Study of SMEs in the Garment Sector

The research team of NRCC LLC conducted the 'Competitiveness Study of SMEs in the Garment Sector' between August and September 2024.

This study aimed to assess the competitiveness of SMEs in the garment sector at both the company capacity and business ecosystem levels, using the Competitiveness Assessment Methodology of the International Trade Center. The study included 100 manufacturers from Ulaanbaatar city and the provinces of Khovd, Zavkhan, Umnugovi, Khuvsgul, Darkhan-Uul, Bayankhongor, Selenge, Khentii, Orkhon, Dornod, and Uvurkhangai.

The Development Solutions NGO commissioned this research as part of the 'Business Excellence for Sustainability and Transparency' (BEST) program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Development Solutions NGO organized the 'Supporting SME Competitiveness with Policy Based on Research' discussion on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Soyombo Hall of the Tuushin Hotel. The event presented the results of competitiveness studies in the garment sector, vegetable and greenhouse sectors, and the construction sector. Panel discussions were held for each sector. Approximately 100 representatives from government agencies, professional associations, NGOs, and SMEs from Ulaanbaatar City attended the event in person.

At the panel discussion on the competitiveness of SMEs in the garment sector, independent economist D. Jargalsaikhan served as the moderator. The panelists included representatives from the SME Agency and the Light Industry Policy Implementation and Coordination Department of MOFA, the Executive Director of the Professional Federations of Sewing Industry O. Sansarkhuu, and the Executive Director of NRCC LLC B. Altantsetseg. They discussed the topic 'From Data to Action: Improving Competitiveness and Supporting Growth in the Garment sector.'
